For us we here at Tower's Powers (hah!), we love Zappa's 70s line up with George Duke, Chester Thompson, and Ruth Underwood. There's something awfully awesome about his ouvre then.

Here's Ruth talking true.

And check out the mallets of fury, a la Ruth:

For us around the water cooler, '70s FZ had the perfect balance of sarcasm, humour, melodic adroitness, harmonic hamonickness, and line up. After which, his lyrical work just gets too bitter and cruel to be handled. And the '80s band really lacked the pizazz of the 70s incarnations. Maybe FZ himself, as read by his lyrics (y'know, Bobby Brown as a really unpleasant but sadly popular ditty) took the band down the wrong rabbit hole.
