Reasons To Be Cheerful

According to Zen & The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance – in order to paint the perfect picture, make yourself perfect. Then paint a picture.*

In this spirit of this, we at Power's Towers are always looking for another 1% to keep our edges sharp, and our wits sharper.

To wit: the gratitude diary.

According to realnotbogusatallandactuallyfactuallycorrect science, peeps who keep a diary of gratitudes for every day (with 5 items per day) have a 25% higher happiness rating than the comparison group (i.e. mardy bums).

Well, seeing as it's a cheap exercise with zero pain involved, we done did it. And it done work! We're actually a doggam sight in better mental shape than ever. So – highly recommended.

Here's how it's done:
  • Get an actual diary of moleskiney notebook – no computers or bits of paper. Keep it all together, handwritten (another psych hack, BTW).
  • Every morning, write 5 things you are grateful for. It can be anything. Deffo do it in the morning – not throughout the day. Give your gratitude some push ups first thing in the a.m.
  • Don't miss a day. If you do, fill it out in retrospect asap.
  • Another hack – keep a successes diary in the back of your book, and do between 1-3 successes of the day. Again, anything counts.
Soon enough – these will meet in the middle, and you can go out and treat yourself to something. Like an ice cream. Or a Ferrari. Or an hour with your feet up.

For us, it's enough to kick back and listen to this classic, gratitudinous, cut from the late Ian Dury, Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3. Lyric sheet most necessary.

* Trey's got it writ on his Stratocaster, from when he was just out of short pants.
